What's Next?

Existing Market
Step 1: What I think is next for Designated Driver is turning the car to mostly solar power. There need to be enough power to keep the car driving throughout the night. The other issue I have found is that if the car is parked in the garage it has to be battery powered. Due to those reasons Designated Driver had to keep a battery in it. There can be extra solar panels put on however.
Step 2:
Interview 1
When asking my first person what feature they would want added to the designated driver they wanted a sunroof. The issue with the sunroof is it would be difficult to place another solar panel anywhere else from the roof and the hood of the car. This would require the car to keep the one solar panel on the hood. This current customer has a sunroof in her Range Rover and said it was one of her favorite features.

Interview 2
During my second interview, she stated that I should add light up features on the inside. Other companies have cars that change colors on the inside. She said not only should the outside look futuristic but the inside as well. I fully agreed that the inside should be just as pleasing as the outside because at the end of the day the person paying for the car should be happy while inside of it.

Interview 3
For my third interview he said that I should that Designated Driver should come up with a cheap version like Telsa did. Maybe it does not have all the features but at least make a fair priced luxury car that more people can afford. I agreed with the interviewee that there should be a cheaper  model of the Designated Design cars.

Step 3:
Before meeting with my interviewees I thought that a good change I could make on the Designated Driver was adding more solar panels to the car so the car does not have to be battery powered. Sometimes when trying to charge your car at the grocery store there may not be any spots. And if there are any spots they tend to be far from the store. This makes battery power cars less accessible to people who struggle walking far. Since the beginning of the semester Designated Design has grown in so many ways. From little warm cupholders, to multiple solar panels to produce less fuel emissions Designated Design is finding way to make life easier.

After meeting my interviewees I thought the best thing to add to designated driver was a base model car. It would have the least perks but give people the chance to see what Designated Driver has. They would still be able to enjoy having the car drive for them and allow them to do whatever else pleases them as they get to their next destination. What I worry about by having a lower cost model is that people will only see the basics of Designated Design. The more people pay the more they get like the sunroof or extra solar panel. The lights would be a feature that could be put in all car models.
New Market.
Step 1: My new market is a non profit. With having Designated Design we would start funding in buses. The buses would drive around the city and offer rides for people to work. They would have little cubicle to lay down in or do work while getting dropped off for work. The idea behind it is to help those who can not afford a car and to promote carpooling.

Step 2: describe how you think your venture concept might be able to create value for people in that market.
My venture creates a market for people who ride the bus because they also get the feature that designated driver provides. The buses would be double deckers so that more people could fit on the bus. Although the ticket seem that it cost more it would run about the same price of normal bus outside of traffic hours. Traffic hours would vary by day and events.

Step 3:
Interview 1
During the interview she said that people who have a Designated Driver should be able to get regular price at busy times. Since people will pay so much to have the car they should not pay for access for the bus. When the bus is outside of traffic hours the bus rides should be free. It is only fair to car for your true customers. Bus riders are making a profit but selling a car is a much larger margin of profit.

Interview 2
The second interviewee said that it was important that their were enough buses within the town to actually be able to get people to places within a reasonable amount of time. If there are only two buses driving around the city they will never get anywhere. He also wanted to know how long it would take before the buses would be making profit.

Step 4:
What surprised me the most was that my existing concept is basically a futuristic replica of the Harry Potter bus. Of course the bus would be much more clean and not as dangerous. The beds would all be reclining chairs that would not fly around the bus when making turns and changing speed. Keeping the reputation from the car to the bus is important. The goal is present Designated Driver as the best kept car company yet.
I did expect people to say that people should get free rides on the bus if they owned a designated driver car. The purpose of the bus was to provide a luxury bus for people who could not afford a car. The bus is also not suppose to be to much more in price either. The new market I created is actually a hit. The bus might actually be a better idea to start with instead of the car. People who ride on transit tend to be a lot more tired. They ride buses or trains for hours where they sit in an uncomfortable plastic chair.  Another idea I came up with after my interviews was maybe charging extra to have a pod and then charging regular price just to stand on the bus. If someone has not bought the pod yet then the person can use it until someone comes to purchase the spot. The spot could be purchased by swiping their card outside the pod before entering. This is also nice for elders who no longer want to deal with car payments and want to get somewhere for a little.

  1. Daryl,
I think that this idea was really outside of the box and something that made for a good read and something to ponder about. The only problem about bringing luxury to people who cannot afford a car is that they cannot afford luxury. I know that it is a non-profit, but the funding for these buses needs to come from somewhere. The bus needs to be built, it needs to pay for tolls if there are any, it needs maintenance, and probably a "driver" on the bus, not to drive because I know that it is driverless, but someone that will watch over what is happening on the bus. People could damage it or not pay their money. I am just concerned about the costs, but am glad to see that you are thinking and innovating as you go along.

  2. Daryl,
Your post was very informative. I found the highlighting of the text a little distracting, I think it would look better if the next post was formatted without that highlighting. It would be cool to see a concept like the Harry Potter bus come to life. In reference to the luxury bus, I’m curious as to what ammenities it would have. Would it be like a limo but in bus form? I’ve been in one like that before, and it was pretty nice. I’ve met the owner of that particular company and he’s quite successful in my opinion.
