Your Entrepreneurship Story

On my study abroad we were paired into groups of three and fours. We had two weeks to create an app based on the problems we heard students were dealing with at school. We found that many people were uninvolved and depressed. While talking to the students we found out that they were uninvolved because they never heard of involvement going on at campus. The purpose of our app "College Connect," was to allow for people on campus to post what they were doing so that other people could see and join. We tested the app out asking how the students felt about it. After doing some adjusting to app to make it easier to navigate the students loved it. The biggest feature they enjoyed was the calendar it built, they said it helped make a social calendar so they knew when and where their extracurricular activities were happening.

The purpose of me taking this class is because it is required for my minor and major. I am an innovation student and if you haven't heard yet, we take classes in the spring and summer and then have off in the fall. The program is only six classes and some are required for my major anyways.  I decided I wanted to graduate earlier so that I can start my masters and that is why I took this class now instead of in the spring. It is a nice class to take while taking financial accounting.

  1. Good evening Daryl,

Your entrepreneurship story was so interesting and really got me thinking about how we need something like that implemented at UF. I constantly find myself looking for things to do on campus, but without following 90,000 Facebook pages it is hard to get my calendar together. If I had one app that told me about what I could do on campus, I would constantly be on there and participating. Great idea! If I had to extend it forward, it may not make much money this way (because the audience does not have money to spend in most cases), but cities, counties, and other municipalities may love to have this feature. Especially in a tourist state like Florida, I know that if Citrus County had an events calendar of this fashion the residents would love to be more involved in the happenings. As a campaign manager for county commissioner, I am always recommending events for the commissioner to be at, but with this app it could be right at our fingertips. I would definitely recommend that you bring this idea to some Chamber of Commerce's wanting to expand their influence wherever they are. That might make some solid profit.

  2. Hi there Daryl! Firstly, I would just like to comment on the fact that this is a very interesting post. That is so cool that you studied abroad!!!! I have always wanted to do that, I think I will this summer! It is sad how common depression is with young students these days. Making an app to help out students is such a smart idea. I have always found that it is difficult to know where to start when wanting to get involved, and I think that in itself deters some students from involving themselves.

  3. Hey Daryl,
The fact that your group was assigned to create an app is pretty cool! I'm sure it'll serve as a good background in the even that you wish to create an app in the future. I'm sure this app could be extremely successful if it were made available on a larger scale, I think I recall someone mentioning a similar app like this in one of the lectures!
